They do. We just can't waste the resources on manning the phone towers for signal. It's better, at least people talk face to face. I can't complain though because it has a lot of neat stuff on it.
[If William knew how much of a problem Adam was having right now, he'd be somewhat sympathetic.]
You're welcome, I guess. & I don't know how archangels work. Michael says it's his own earthly body & not belonging to anyone else.
[How very biblical. Angels torch the planet and force people to scale back on what makes modern life modern. People couldn't even be bothered to call their cities by their proper names, according to William
It's not a world Adam would want to live in, but he has to wonder if that's what would have happened if Michael had won against Lucifer and delivered everyone to paradise like Zachariah had said. A "paradise" ushered in by angels has to be worse than even the darkest underbelly of a human-run world.]
You'd think an earthly body could bleed, then. Can they be killed?
It sounds it, but we have a lot of technology for other things. Vega is lucky to have Senator Thorn, of House Thorn. She's a nuclear scientist, so we're good for electricity & agriculture. Can't ask for more than that.
Killed? Good question. I did hear something about Michael winding up in the infirmary a little while back, but by the time I got there to offer sympathies he'd already left & seemed fine.
[Look at you, William, taking your extermination like a champ. Adam can think of asking for a lot more than that... like all angels dropping dead, for instance.
But when Adam reads the words "I'll ask him," he gets a bad urge to cringe. Whoa, back up the bus. Adam's pretty sure that even if Michael's heart has grown three sizes too big in this place, you don't just ask an archangel what it's weak points are.]
Don't ask unless you want to be paste.
Is Michael deaf, dumb, and blind on top of being a humanitarian? If not, asking him how you kill him is going to be pretty obvious.
[For a world on the brink of destruction, they're all doing okay for themselves. It's not too shabby unless you're outside of Vega. Then it's the worst angel infested wastelands....]
It depends on how I ask it. And he won't kill me, Michael doesn't seem inclined that way. The worst I'll get is a disapproving glare. Or commended on thinking of fighting in case Gabriel turns up.
Paste doesn't sound fun anyway. Leave it with me, I'll find out what can hurt them one way or another. I'm quietly confident on this.
You want to bet your life on Michael's mood? If he's anything like the one I know, those are crap odds.
[This is Michael they're talking about. "Doesn't seem inclined" is like saying carnivores don't seem inclined to eat meat.]
Or you're suicidally brave. How do you expect to squeeze that out of him?
[If the majority of people haven't learned these things by now in all the years angels have been doing... whatever it is they do... then that kind of implies they've been keeping that part under wraps. Probably because power and knowledge in a person's hands means they don't have to put up with angels' shit.
He doesn't know William from a hole in the wall, but provoking an archangel is only something he'd advise if Adam wanted that person dead. And even then, he wouldn't advise it.]
It isn't betting my life though. This Michael won't kill me just for asking a question. Thinking on it, I can't think of a time when he actually has killed a person, & he's been around for some time.
I'll just be honest & say I want to know. He'd probably appreciate that more than me lying. Don't worry, I won't mention you.
[Or he just doesn't go around axe-murdering people in public like Tom. Adam's been around a Michael for such a long time, surrounded by fire and misery that he strives every day not to think about, that no amount of "well maybe" or "I don't think" is about to convince him to treat Michael like one of the guys. If William has worth, some kind of reason for an archangel to tolerate him, that's great, but that's not how it works in Adam's world.
The Michael he knows from home doesn't even need to hurt him, Adam's not worth that kind of attention when he's already mincemeat in the eyes of the angels. The assurance his name won't find its way on top of this other Michael's desk is thin and not that comforting, given all of this.
On the radar of two Michaels? Just the thought makes him want to crash face-first into his covers and never come out from under them.]
Seriously, don't. There's got to be other people who know.
[And William doesn't want to make them start asking questions about him.]
[The killing comment is a bit of a white lie, as Michael has killed exactly one person at the point William remembers. But in his opinion that's questionable to begin with.]
I'll just see what I can do in a way that doesn't result in any harm or injury. I doubt other people here would know, if they're a different species of angel or something it could be something new....
[William, don't you know that once an angel pops, it can't stop?]
Being a fast-talker better be in your job description. I can't stop you, but for the record, I think it's a bad idea. That's coming from someone who's done some stupid things in front of angels and regretted it.
But if you got sucked up here, other people you know could, too. Random people show up all the time.
[He does. It's just down to making sure Michael doesn't pop.]
I talk for a living, I should be fine or I am in the wrong job. Besides, I'm only asking for information that Michael has already given to the Senate in some shape or form.
If it is that random, I cannot sit & just hope for the best. Michael isn't violently inclined towards humanity, so this will work out, you'll see. I might not get an answer, but I also won't be attacked for it.
If you had a world-wide war, why don't you already know?
[Adam thinks it's a fair question. Ignoring whether or not Michael could ever be trusted, if the entire world knows about the existence of angels, why isn't knowing how to deal with ones like Michael public knowledge?
William's made himself sound like he's a pretty big deal in this surviving city of his; Adam doesn't get how he can't know, or why anyone would ever bother keeping it a secret if not for a stupid reason.]
Can't talk you out of it. Good luck with that. The Michael I know isn't the sharing and caring type.
[Really, he means it. He doesn't want anyone suffering at the hands of angels, even a guy who makes it sound like he knows what he's doing.]
It isn't my job to know. My father may be part of the Senate, but he doesn't share everything. That & archangels don't have the same physiology as the normal ones. What kills the lesser ones just does not work on Gabriel or Michael.
Thanks, I'll let you know if he decides to share anything with me.
[Adam would have thought knowing how to fight back was kind of need-to-know, not an optional life lesson. It hadn't always been so. Back before, Adam hadn't known there were even monsters under the bed people needed to protect themselves from, but these days he can't imagine having a literal army of angels breathing down his neck without wanting to know how best to nail it where it hurts.
You'd be looking over your shoulder every day, wouldn't you? Thinking about them? Worrying about them?
Maybe his anger talking. God knows Hell's left him with enough of it. Wanting to survive monsters and making them hurt while he does is like a lingering vestige of the pit, marking his soul with something dark and putrid.]
Knowing how they tick would help if they ever go on a rampage, but I wasn't trying to make you a monster detective. Just take care of yourself first.

[The most important question of all.]
